James Murphy, MD, FAAO, FACS

Refractive Cataract and Interventional Glaucoma

Dr. James Murphy is a fellowship-trained glaucoma specialist, focusing on complex cataract and anterior segment surgical techniques. He has extensive experience in laser-assisted cataract surgery, premium intraocular lens implantation, complex and advanced techniques in cataract surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), traditional and implant glaucoma surgery, as well as laser treatments for glaucoma. His special interests lie in technology for the detection and monitoring of diseases, along with minimally invasive surgical treatments for glaucoma.

Dr. James Murphy graduated with honors from The University of Wisconsin Madison, where he earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Biochemistry and Spanish Linguistics. He then took a one-year sabbatical to volunteer at The Children’s Hospital of Oaxaca located in Oaxaca, Mexico. Upon returning, he attended the Medical College of Wisconsin. While attending medical school, he actively participated in and organized several medical missions to Central and South America. Dr. Murphy graduated with honors from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2011, earning his Medical Degree. He subsequently completed his internship and residency in ophthalmology at The State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. During residency, his particular interest in the management of glaucoma, complex cataract, and anterior segment diseases developed, leading him to pursue a fellowship in glaucoma and complex anterior segment surgery at the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute of the Columbia University-New York Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, New York. There, he was also appointed as an instructor in ophthalmology and played active roles in the clinical and surgical education of both residents and medical students of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.
